November celebrates an important aspect of family law

People often view court proceedings as a stressful or negative experience. This is understandable, because in some cases, legal action follows a troubling or traumatic situation like a crime or the end of a marriage. Many people associate family law with matters like divorce or child custody battles. While these are certainly matters that Missouri families may have to face, an annual campaign strives to remind people that there are also happy and positive matters that are handled by family law courts.

Families are preparing to gather together and celebrate Thanksgiving, so perhaps it is especially fitting that November is also National Adoption Month. For many children, a “forever family” would be a dream come true. The state estimates that there are about 1,200 children waiting to be adopted, and the Department of Social Services wants to bring awareness to the adoption process through education and outreach.

Approaching the possibility of adoption may seem overwhelming, and it is not uncommon for people to feel confused by inaccurate or outdated information. In Missouri, a person need not be married to adopt a child, and people that are single, widowed or divorced should not feel discouraged. A parent can adopt more than one child, and there are sibling groups in need of a loving home. Families can get more information about adoption by accessing moheart gallery, an online resource the state maintains to connect children awaiting adoption with prospective parents.

The state of Missouri has done a wonderful job providing awareness and some basic education, but adoption is a process that is handled in family court. A person or couple that is ready to begin the adoption journey might want to consult an attorney that focuses on family law. An attorney can help a client become familiar with and complete the steps necessary to officially welcome a child to the family.
