Custody arrangements after a divorce can come in all sorts of forms. The most common and well-known is joint custody. In this arrangement, one parent will generally keep the children for most of the time, while the other gets to see them for a few days out of the week (typically weekends). The parents still share financial and often legal responsibility of the children, however.
This type of joint custody can be exhausting for both the children and the parents. Parents are constantly having to keep track of who has the children, when to have the house clean, if they need to go grocery shopping for the visitation, buying extra beds and other factors. Children are constantly being moved from one home to another, disrupting schedules and school/sleep patterns. One way to alleviate this is to institute bird’s nest custody.
With bird’s nest custody, the children never have to move from one home to another. Rather, the parents rotate out of the shared house. That way, children are never being displaced, and their schedules are not constantly being changed.
The biggest downside to this form of joint custody is that both parents may have to get separate places, leading to three residences for the family in Missouri. But, if both parents can agree on an apartment that they would occupy separately while the other is in the original home, costs can be cut down.
Divorce and custody arrangements are never fun topics to discuss. But having an expert attorney in Saint Charles by your side can make the process faster and smoother. This allows both parties to move on with their lives quicker and spend more time with their children.
